Paul says, "What might happen if I do just vent it to the atmosphere?"

Don't do it.  I did it for about 6 mos on the 1.6 TD and then found a gritty substance in the oil.  I made a road draft tube, so crud must have migrated up the hose.  Keep the system closed.

P.S.--It's also illegal.
