Subject:Cold Start Unsolved: Help
From:Rob Lebo

My cold start problems are still unsolved on my 91 Carat 2.1L. As I mentioned
in last weeks post, I replaced the Temp 2 sensor and adjusted the throttle
switch properly, replaced plugs, distrib cap and rotor cleaned (only 25K miles
and like-new) , idle stabilizer selenoid removed, cleaned and verified as
functional, new battery, new oxygen sensor, Air Flow Meter cap popped and
resistive trace cleaned. So, yesterday I removed and sanded all the male
connector contacts I could find in the engine compartment including the engine
ground strap and coated them with dielectric grease before plugging back
together. All to no avail... At a cold start, starter turns over and the engine
barely begins to catch after one or two tries (the starter is fine). It rises to idle
after about 2-3 seconds but will shut off if I touch the pedel. I have to feather
the pedel to keep it running and hesitation occurs until I drive a few miles and
everything warms up. Again, after warm-up, no start problems and the van runs
great.
So, listees, I need your help to try and figure this one out before I go to the
dealer and spend $$$. A friend suggested that I drill out the cap on the throttle
body and adjust the CO screw underneath. What do You think of this course
of action. Also, does anyone know what the vacuum pressure should be at idle
(mine reads 10 PSI). All help is appreciated. TIA.
