Subject:Flying without pilot (bearing)
From:Steve Frisbee

I've been flying pilotless...

While replacing clutch and manual tranny mainshaft seal on my 85 1.9L,
I discovered my pilot bearing was obliterated, with a very thin shell
of it remaining in the crankshaft cavity behind flywheel. The Bentley
manual shows a spacer and felt washer should be with the pilot
bearing, but they are nowhere to be found (also an o-ring with oil
seal?). My clutch kit has the bearing but no spacer or felt washer.

I am unclear how the whole setup goes together: how are spacer and
felt washer held in place behind flywheel to go on tranny mainshaft?
I would appreciate it if someone could walk me through assembly, from
the crankshaft shims out to the flywheel (I am replacing oil seal
while in there). Are the spacer/washer needed, and where can they be
sourced from?

Finally, any thoughts on what would cause my pilot bearing to be
destroyed like that?

Thanks,
Steve
