I'd like to improve the performance of my 1984 Vanagon "within reason".
I have the following parameters:

A. Spend less than US$1,000
B. Maintain conformance to legal requirements (or at least appear to meet
requirements so that the car can be licensed in California)
C. Install these items myself as much as possible.

I'm thinking along the following lines:

#1. K&N air filter
#2. Exhaust system
#3. Q-chip

Any ideas, suggestions, opinions, vendors, prices... ?
