The Google search does work well, but the command is "site:vanagon.com"

So if you want info on headlights, in the Google search bar enter...

headlights site:vanagon.com

As far as I can tell, the majority of messages are actually not indexed by
google.

The best thing I've come up with is to do what the original poster was
trying to do: search by email.  But the address for searching is
listserv@gerry.vanagon.com, not vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com
