Engine was running fine (1600 dual port, no I know it's not stock but I
might change it) but suddenly will not idle.  What do I need to check?

Starts fine, sounds like it's running like a top, but take your foot off the
accelerator and nothing - it dies.

My Vanagon content is that both the 87 and 1960 need a bath this weekend -
they're both super dusty - yuck!
