It sounds like you have it hooked up wrong. Their should be no bending of the lines. When you use the 1 lb bottle the main tank should be closed. Even if left open the check valve should stop what ever is in the tank from coming back out. When you unhook the 1 lb bottle, some propane will escape until the bottle is clear.
