Trouble again volks.  I know you people can help.

81 air cooled.  N. Texas.

Got in the van to drive home from a friend's house in town today and Elly wouldn't start.  She didn't even try.  The battery voltage is at 12.26.  I beat on what I think is the starter (approx. 4" cylinder with a smaller cylinder attached to it that can be seen by looking up under the passenger side rear wheel well) a few times and it now turns a little but not fast enough to start.

If anyone has any suggestions to help me get home tonight please let me know.
