hi i have a 83 vanagon- just bought it. i have the old 1.6 out- the previous
owner removed it because of head leaks. then he took the heads to a machine
shop- they told him they were junk- so he threw them away!! i have the 1.9
short block, cases split but not apart- he coudnt get the pistons off.  so
the question of the day is " i know 1.9 cores are about 600 usd. does anybody
need this for a core???" im converting to a different drivetrain (sorry
purists!) so i dont need it.
