I had a similar experience with my '86 syncro, and it was traced to the main
power wire (red) coming off the alternator and supplying the ECU among other
things.  It had broken inside the plastic sleeve covering the crimp-on ring
connector at the alternator, and the connection was intermittent.  You might
want to check that.  It wasn't visible, and it was very intermittent.
