Could anybody in the state of North Carolina tell me how your Vanagon (mine is a 1980) is dealing with emissions testing. I called a local inspector and he said the cut off for not having to emissions test is 1974. I'm particularly interested because the PO installed a 3rd party exhaust system which did not include a Catalytic Converter. I've got until the end of February to resolve this issue. Thanks all and I'll see you Saturday in Durham :-) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1980 Vanagon Westfalia camper Currently Under Construction Next Projects: 1. Concerns about Emissions Testing and Exhaust system $$$ (before Mar 96) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ PREVIOUS MESSAGE------for the history of the problem... I recently bought a 1980 Vanagon Westfalia. I recently determined that one of the previous owners installed a different exhaust system than the factory. The replacement system appears to have the muffler attached to the heat exchangers - no Catalytic Converter . I am concerned about this because I live in a city where certain vehicles must pass an emissions test before passing the North Carolina Department of Transportation inspection. I have three questions: 1. Is the 1980 exempt from this emissions testing because of its age? 2. If not, can I just install a Catalytic Converter onto the exhaust system? 3. If not who can suggest a reasonably priced exhaust system? Thanks again... ================================================== David B.
