The reference is a research paper done by the CA CARB people in early 1990s. (it also referenced in it a major fuels study done by VW. I am still looking for that one. I believe it is the one VW did to meet the brazilian GVT requirements on going to alcohol) It has in it a clearly stated warning of fuel lines made prior to 1991 as not being MTBE compatible. The note is that it accelerates the aging process of the rubber used for the lines. It also states that low pressure fuel lines of the early 80s and before (about the last of the carbed engines) are highly degraded by MTBE. Any guesses what that says about our vanagons fuel lines and someone selling NOS fuel lines??? Make sure the rubber you are buying is the newer formulations. jimt Planned insanity is best.
