So, DC got it's first sticking snow of the year. Maybe only an inch or two on the streets. Cars (and SUVs) all over the place (i.e. NOT in their lanes). This was the first chance to drive my Syncro Westy in the snow since the 6 cylinder Subaru engine went in last summer. I had also had the brakes upgraded (SA big brakes up front, discs in the back). So this was the first good opportunitiy to check out the handling of the van in slippery conditions. The EG33 engine is DEFINITELY heavier than a waterboxer engine, and that extra weight is noticable most when the road surface is slick. The new brakes kick in VERY strongly, so I have to be even more gingerly when braking. A stock Vanagon Syncro is a WONDERFUL vehicle in snow. When driving in slick conditions like this, too much HP can be a bad thing as it allows you to very easily spin your tires (even in a syncro.) The EG33 engine has a LOT more power than a stock waterboxer, which means having to be more careful when first moving (getting 3 wheels spinning is quite the novelty for me.) Saturday, here in DC, might give us something more significant to play in...but since I'll be the host of a party, I won't have the chance to slip slide away...
