Subject:broken speedometer?

Hey team,

My speedometer (and odometer) broke about 3 months ago and I'm finally
getting around to fixing it. I was driving on the highway when something
popped and the needle started spinning around. The suggestions at the time
were:

1. Check to make sure the cable hasn't broken.
2. Check the plastic connector at the base of the speedometer.
3. Check to see if the cable is stripped at the grease cap.

I removed the instrument cluster and disconnected the cable and this is what
I found:

If I yank on the end of the cable in the dash, it doesn't give so I think my
cable is ok.

When I was fixing the tach before I broke the plastic connector, not where
it meets the speedo but at the base of the cable. I connected it and it
worked fine for 6 months. I don't think this is the problem.

There's a bit of play at the grease cap, but i'm not sure what's normal. I
can't pull the cable out but the pin does wiggle a bit at the cap. Maybe
it's spinning freely, but how can I tell?

Any advice is appreciated.

Also, when i pulled out the switches I lost the red cover for the emergency
brake light indicator in to the dash abyss. Anyone know if i can still get
this at the dealer, what the part number is or maybe someone has an extra
sitting around?

Thanks again!
