Before I would spend any money on another tank (VW or aftermarket),  I
would take a look at one of the restoration kits such as the one from
Eastwood.      Eastwood has a great reputation among old car restorers.  Go
to their "Specialty Coatings"  section and check out their $40 gas tank
sealant kit.
