I also recall the 2.5lTDI available in SA but I could have been mistaken.
Karl Mullendore has info on that and on conversions using the mechanical
TDI.

I have ridden in Karl's Diesel syncro.  Very nice.  Excellent range.  Not
too "dieselly".

Great torque, great fuel economy.
