Pull out Oil Filler

Here's another tip when added oil to your Vanagon.  An easy way to keep the
license plate holder open is to simply open it and put the plastic oil filler
tube cap at the base near the hinge so it can't close --- this works great!
I drove
Vanagon campers for 18 years until I saw a VW mechanic use this trick to hold
open the license plate holder.
