I have a 1987 Vanagon Westy Syncro that I'm trying to find the
vibration problem on and need some help. Here is what's happening.
When driving off the van will begin to vibrate, just like your driving
on those highway vibration strips to wake you up, when getting near 50 km/hr.
At 55 to 60 km/hr it seems to be the worst. After that it seems to subside
somewhat but is evident at all speeds right up to 140 km/hr. At 120 to 140
km/hr the vibration seems to smooth out and when your release the gas pedal
it seems to go away all together for a moment or two. When you depress the
accelerator the vibration continues. Also when lugging the engine in any
gear the same vibration is produced. I have had the vehicle up on four jack
stands and inspected all eight CV joints and the two propellor shaft U-joints
and find nothing loose. I do see one torn CV joint boot on the RH outer rear
drive shaft. I am going to replace this boot and may find the CV joint
damaged but so far it seems good. I also notice that when turning in a tight
radius the rear wheels scrub and the van seems to not want to roll freely.
Is this normal on the syncro ? This van does have the diff lock and the
dashboard selector is off. Maybe it is defective and engaged ? Trying to
find a cure for the vibration ! Any help appreciated.
Cheers
