La Paz, Bolivia

5 April 2001

Hello all

We have just arrived in La Paz, Bolivia this afternoon. Ran through a place yesterday where the llamas and alpacas were grazing in the snow. At the Chilean border there were snow flurries and coming into La Paz through El Alto at 4,000 meters, there was snowy slush on the streets and I am still in shorts from the deserts of Chile.

Perhaps tomorrow the weather will be a little better. If not we will head out for Lake Titicaca and Peru where we will cross at the Straights of Tiquina and from there head to Cuzco.

Day before yesterday we went to a museum where the Chinchorro mummies are kept. They were buried between 2,000 and 8,000 years ago predating the Egyptian mummies. There was an excellent exhibit there in the valley of Azara behind Arica chronically 10,000 years of human existence in the area.

Either this afternoon or in the morning we will visit the pieces from Tiahuanaku that are now housed here in La Paz and then to complete the circuit, we will go to the site of the city of Tiahuanaku which predates the Incas on the way out.

From a cool and rainy La Paz,
