I just found this message in my spam folder.
You may have a wire that is broken or corroded inside the insulation.  Did the wires you cleaned up look good or was corrosion visible?  If it was, then it may be inside the wire also.  Sometimes one only needs to cut back the wire until good clean wire is found. If they have never been changed out this may be the problem.  Folks more mechanically minded than I may give you info on how to check this issue.  It is not rare.
I hope someone chimes in on this.
