My choice has been Rotella T6 5w40 synthetic for… fifteen years? I currently run it in: the ABA powered Vanagon, the Porsche 944, the T5 powered Volvo, the R1100 BMW, the F-350 pickup. It works well for me in a world that has temps from -20º to 105º F.  It is a diesel rated oil and at the time I started using it, it had the highest zinc (ZDDP) content of any commonly available motor oil. ZDDP has been determined to be beneficial for flat tappet engines like the wasserboxer. It’s relatively inexpensive and seems to be stocked everywhere. I no longer have an H4 motor in anything, but old habits die hard. 

On this subject, the search engine of your choice will return more information than you can comfortably digest. Bob is the oil guy seems to be the site of choice, but opinions abound!
