Hi all,
On the list of many fixes my '90 syncro needs, one was to figure out some
severe clutch judder/chattering or "incomplete releasing" which
occurred only in reverse. This started after I replaced all the clutch
components with new Luk stuff a few years ago. And I replaced all the
transmission rubber mounts at the same time. It did not occur with the old
clutch components but I thought I'd do a little preventive maintenance
(wrong!). Flywheel (resurfaced and endplay adjusted), new clutch disc,  new
pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bearing. Forward driving and
shifting never caused the problem only in reverse. So I procrastinated but
now I have the engine out for a top end rebuild and I decided to at least
change the cross shaft/release shaft whichever term is acceptable. The old
shaft shows wear on the 2 rounded areas that I have read can cause this
problem. I have an aftermarket shaft that looks ok but when I slide the
slave cylinder arm on to the end of the  new cross shaft it seems a little
loose, I had to remove the arm from the old shaft with a puller which
wasn't difficult at all. So as a result I'm suspicious of the new shaft.
I'm considering buying a new much more expensive shaft from one of our
excellent vendors hoping to get a better fit with the arm.
