Yes, there is a reason why engineers determined a tachometer on dash is a good thing, whether Formula 1 or Vanagon.  And many of us do Sound Deadening in our vans, so with all happening with wind noise and all it's easy sometimes to lose track of RPMs.  Keep looking to find one.  Even if expensive, I deem well worth it.  Go ahead, pay the bucks.....get one while you can.
