Yes, you are absolutely correct about the OEM jack, and mine's in perfect shape.  I think I've been watching too many YouTube videos on how to do the tie rod job....and all those guys use either lift or floor jack...but for this job and probably many others, the windup OEM jack and jack stands should work just fine.
